How (not what) is Regenerative Agriculture

Definitions

Ethan Soloviev, in his article regenerative-agriculture-continuum, declares that Regenerative Agriculture can not, and should not, be defined since:

‘Define’ literally means, “bring to an end.’ It comes from the Latin verb, definire, composed of de- ‘completely’ + finire ‘to bound, limit,’ from finis, ‘boundary, end.’

Very simply, we can state the intention as:

Leaving the land better off with each season that passes.

Then comes the how, and this will be ever changing since the context will be different in every place and from one day, season or year, to the next.

Farming, Redefined

#video

A 2024 Film about Regenerative Agriculture, that comes close to defining this elusive term.

Science journalist Silvia Lazzaris takes us on a journey around the world. From Ernst Gotsch’s lush syntropic farm in Bahia, Brazil—where once-barren land has been transformed into a thriving ecosystem—to Juntos Farm in Ibiza, where regenerative farming is strengthening communities, viewers will see the movement in action.

Then Silvia dives deeper, speaking with leading soil health and agroecology experts to examine if and how regenerative agriculture can truly deliver on its promises. Farming, Redefined is a groundbreaking documentary that invites you to imagine a future for agriculture grounded in restoration, education, and a healthier planet for generations to come.

Impacts and Outcomes

ata Regenerative offers the eov-accreditation as a way to measure the impacts, rather than the actions.

Allen Williams and Gabe Brown offer their 6-3-4-method as a practical guide comprising of six principles, three rules, and four outcomes.

These are a how not a 'what', and don't define regenerative agriculture, but point to actions which have been shown to have a regenerative measurable improvements to the ecology of an ecosystem. Actions done by a steward of the land, a farmer who is embracing his/her role as a human in nature and acting as nature, to enhance the ecosystem.
